Dental Crowns and Bridges in Dentistry

Dental crowns and bridges are often referred to as the "bread and butter" of dentistry and for good reason — they are routine procedures that clinicians perform on a weekly basis, often several times per day. But, even though they are incredibly common, their importance cannot be overstated. Crowns and bridges play a crucial role in restoring a patient's smile and improving their oral health, making them fundamental to everyday dentistry:

  • Dental Crowns: A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that's placed over a tooth to restore its strength, appearance and function. Dental crowns are often recommended to protect and restore a weakened, cracked or severely decayed tooth, as well as a tooth that's recently undergone a root canal, safeguarding it from further damage.
  • Dental Bridges: A dental bridge is a restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It "bridges" the gap by anchoring to adjacent teeth, dental crowns or implants, restoring function and preventing bite and alignment issues. Dental bridges are an effective option when surgery isn't necessary, and the surrounding teeth are healthy enough to support them.

Common Dental Crown and Bridge Material Types

When choosing the right material for crowns and bridges, it's important to consider the location of the restoration, the patient's needs and the desired outcome. To help patients better understand their options, here's a breakdown of some of the most commonly used materials for dental bridges and crowns:

All-Ceramic

Ceramic crown and bridge material is valued for its strength and its ability to closely mimic the appearance of natural teeth, making it a popular choice for restoring front teeth. Biocompatible and metal-free, it's also a suitable option for patients with metal allergies and sensitivities. It may not be an ideal choice for all cases, however, especially for patients with heavy grinding, those who require extensive bridgework or those looking for a more cost-effective option.

Zirconia

Similar to all-ceramic, zirconia crown and bridge material is biocompatible and metal-free, making it less likely to cause allergic reactions or sensitivities. A relatively newer material compared to its counterparts, zirconia has gained popularity in dentistry due to its exceptional strength and durability, often chosen for back teeth like molars that can withstand heavy chewing forces. But, for cost-conscious patients, or for those looking for the same level of translucency as achieved by ceramic, zirconia crowns may not be the best option.

Stainless Steel

When repairing and preserving compromised baby teeth, a stainless steel crown is one of the most commonly used materials for pediatric patients, thanks to its low cost and durability. Pre-made in various sizes, stainless steel allows for quick and easy placement, reduced chair time and more convenient dental visits. However, since stainless steel is silver in appearance, it's less esthetically pleasing than other material types, especially on visible teeth. For this reason, a stainless steel crown is typically only used for children and as a temporary option for adults.

Porcelain Fused Metal (PFM)

A fixture in dentistry for decades, porcelain fused metal is a restorative material that combines the strength of a metal base with the natural look of porcelain. This combination makes a porcelain fused metal crown a good choice for front and back teeth, offering strong support and natural color matching with surrounding teeth. But, despite its advantages, there are some drawbacks to consider, including the potential for chipping, metal sensitivity and the visibility of the metal base at the gum line, especially after gum recession.
